The newest member of our family, Emma Marie, was born August 4, 1997 at 7:39 am at the Shawnee Mission, Kansas, Medical Center. She weighed 6lbs.2ozs and was 17 inches long. Since she was a few weeks premature, she spent a week in the hospital before we brought her home on August 11.
We'll be having some quality time at home over the next few weeks. We are both eligible for parental leave to provide some time at home with Emma. My employer, the Kansas Insurance Department, provides great support for natural and adoptive parents through our "Babies at Work" program, so Emma will be able to join me at my job up until she's six months old!
We're grateful for the help given by Catholic Community Services, who served as our adoption agency. They have provided lots of great information and support to us as we've worked through the adoption process. For anyone considering adoption, we would recommend them. Click here for a description of their ideas on adoption.

Elizabeth is a very happy big sister. She's always helping out with holding and feeding the baby, and giving it lots of loving care. It's amazing how "grown up" an 8 year old becomes when there's a new baby in the house! She's also having a great time caring for her Tamagochi.
